Created specifically for follow-spot operation, the ROBE ROBIN BMFL Followspot is a custom-modified BMFL designed for productions that need the precision of a traditional followspot with the flexibility of motorized movement. It supports both motorised positioning and hands-on manual operation via follow-spot handles, making it well suited for theatre, broadcast, concerts, and live events where quick, confident pickup and tracking matter.

Optics, Output, and Beam Control

The BMFL FollowSpot takes advantage of its wide 160 mm front lens and a high CRI 1700W lamp (OSRAM Lok-it! HTI 1700/PS, PGJX28 base). With a custom light source designed for Robe it produces an astounding 250,000 lux at 5 metres and has a wide zoom range of 5° to 55° (11:1) with precise focusing. Robe’s proprietary optical design uses a dichroic glass reflector and high-efficiency component optics to maximize light throughput and maintain consistent beam quality across the zoom range.

Color, Temperature, and Texture Tools

For matching stage looks and camera requirements, the fixture provides CMY color mixing (cyan, magenta, yellow each 0 to 100%) plus a variable CTO range of 2,700 to 6,000 K for warming or balancing color temperature. Two color wheels add fast access to fixed and replaceable dichroic options, including deep red, deep blue, orange, green, magenta, congo blue, plus additional “SLOT&LOCK” colors such as pink, lavender, laser green, 9000 K CTB, minus half and minus green (each wheel includes white). Variable frost filters (Light, Medium, plus replaceable Heavy with two additional frosts included) help soften edges or broaden the beam for more flattering coverage.

Followspot-Ready Control and Effects

Manually or remotely controllable features include smooth color mixing and CTO flags, focus, zoom, and quick pulsing iris. The motorized, stepless iris supports pulse effects up to 3 Hz for rhythmic size changes, while a separate dual blade shutter system provides strobe effects up to 10 Hz and full blackout. An optimized dual blade dimmer system is designed for exceptionally smooth fades, useful for cue-heavy theatrical operation.

Electrical and Physical Details

The light source is a compact short-arc metal halide lamp with a rated lifetime of 750 hours at 1700 W, 1500 W, or Quiet mode. Color rendering is specified at CRI 92+ with a 6,000 K color temperature, and on/off control is automatic and remote via an electronic ballast. Dimensions are 826 mm (head vertical) x 483 mm x 335 mm, and weight is 38.4 kg (84.7 lbs).
